Mile High United Way Turkey Trot This 4-mile race celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013! In addition to getting your metabolism revved up, your participation and, specifically, your registration fee go toward a T-shirt, a goody bag, and resources to improve childhood literacy, high school graduation rates and economic self-sufficiency for adults and families. Race day registration and start activities begins bright and early (8 a.m.) at Wash Park. Snacks and a beer garden are among the post-race festivities.

Turkey Chase 5K This race, which starts at 9 a.m. at Apex Fieldhouse in Arvada and winds along the scenic Van Bibber Creek Trail, is yet another chance to get some exercise in before your Thanksgiving feast. Plus, all proceeds from the Turkey Chase benefit programs at Denver Rescue Mission, which helps men, women and children get back on their feet, grow spiritually, heal emotionally and become more self-sufficient, productive members of our community.

Thanksgiving Buffet at the Downtown Aquarium If you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else this Thanksgiving, head over to the aquarium at 700 Water St. Traditional dishes, a kids buffet, and desserts are included. Diners also get 50% off Adventure Exhibit wristbands and validated parking! To make reservations, call (303)561-4450.

Downtown Denver Grand Illumination Kick off the holiday season with one of the area’s longest running traditions. Watch as downtown gets lit up from Denver Union Station to the City & County Building across from Civic Center Park. After a countdown that begins at 6:30 p.m., more than 550,000 energy efficient LED lights will turn the 16th Street Mall, California Street between 14th and 17th, and Curtis Street between 14th and 16th into a dazzling promenade. Pre-lighting festivities begin at 6 p.m. and include a craft table courtesy of The Children’s Museum of Denver, a choir performance, tasty treats from LoDo restaurants, and a visit from Dinger Claus (the Colorado Rockies mascot decked out in a holiday uniform).

Rocky Mountain Auto Show Known as the Creme de la Chrome of the Rockies, this auto show cruises into the Colorado Convention Center today. Attendees can expect to see millions of dollars worth of cars, trucks and motorcycles ranging from mint condition originals to custom creations. This year, the event’s organizers are touting “an interactive feature that has never taken place” at the show. Hmm… You have until Sunday to check it out.

Holiday Lighting in LoHi Ho, ho, ho! Santa and his beloved reindeer will touch down at Little Man Ice Cream for this annual celebration, which includes caroling, chestnuts on an open fire, hay rides, free food and, of course, lighting the neighborhood’s 25-foot Christmas tree.
